UNDERSTAND HOW OUR PRICING & BOOKING PROCESS WORKS

Our skip hire prices are based on your delivery and collection postcode. While the map shows the areas we cover, we calculate your price using our delivery zones, which are based on travel time from RIG. The delivery zones help us provide fair and consistent pricing by taking into account the return journey for delivering and collecting your skip, along with an allowance for loading and unloading. Simply enter your postcode when requesting a quote, and we’ll confirm that we cover your area, which delivery zone your address falls into and the price for your chosen skip size.

FAQ’s

Take a look at our frequently asked questions below. If you cannot find the answer you need, contact us today and our team will be happy to help.

What size skip do I need?

This depends on the amount and type of waste you have. Smaller skips are suitable for garden clearances, bathroom refits and small DIY jobs, while larger skips are better for house clearances, building projects and heavy construction waste. We can help recommend the right size when you request a quote.

How long can I keep a skip?

Hire periods can vary depending on availability and your project needs. Let us know how long you think you’ll need it, and we’ll confirm the hire period when booking.

How much does skip hire cost?

The price depends on your location, skip size, waste type and how long you need the skip for. At RIG, we’ll provide a clear quote before booking so you know exactly what to expect.

Do I need a permit for a skip?

If you are placing a skip on a public road or area you will need a permit. Speak to the team and we can arrange this for you. If placing on private land no permit is required

Can a skip go on the pavement?

No. GOV.UK states that skips cannot be placed on the pavement. If your skip needs to go on a road, you will need a permit, see do i need a permit for a skip? You may also need safety lights, cones or reflective markings depending on local council rules.

What can I put in a skip?

Most general waste, garden waste, soil, rubble, bricks, concrete, wood, metals, plastics and mixed construction waste can usually go in a skip. Tell us what waste you have when booking so we can make sure the correct skip and disposal route is arranged.

What can’t I put in a skip?

Items such as asbestos, chemicals, paint, gas bottles, tyres, fridges, freezers, batteries, oils, electrical items and hazardous waste usually need separate handling. Hazardous waste movements require the correct paperwork, including consignment notes. Additional charges will be applied for any unexcepted items put in your skip.

Can I put asbestos in a skip?

No, asbestos bound materials need to be treated at licensed facilities and cannot be accepted by RIG skips.

Can I put soil and rubble in a skip?

Yes, soil, rubble, concrete and bricks can usually be accepted, but they are heavy materials. You may need a specific skip type or size limit, so tell us before booking.

Can I mix waste types in the skip?

Often yes, but some materials need to be kept separate, especially plasterboard, hazardous waste, electrical items or liquids. Separating waste correctly can also help reduce contamination and support recycling.

Can I fill the skip above the sides?

No. Skips must be loaded level with the sides so they can be transported safely. Overfilled skips will not be collected until excess waste is removed.

Do I need to be there when the skip is delivered?

Not always, as long as we have clear delivery instructions and access. If placement is tight, gated, restricted or on a shared area, it is best for someone to be there.

How much space is needed for delivery?

The lorry needs safe access, enough turning space and a stable area to place the skip. Please tell us about narrow lanes, low cables, parked cars, soft ground, steep drives or restricted access before delivery.

Can you deliver to a driveway?

Yes, if there is enough space and the ground is suitable. Please be aware that heavy skips and lorries may mark surfaces such as block paving, tarmac or soft ground.

What happens to the waste after collection?

The skip is taken to an authorised waste facility where materials are sorted for reuse, recycling or responsible disposal wherever possible. Waste holders have a duty of care to make sure waste is handled safely and transferred to authorised people or sites.

How do I know my waste is being handled legally?

RIG is a registered waste carrier and operates from an authorised waste site.

Can I hire a skip for commercial waste?

Yes, skips can be used for domestic, industrial, commercial and construction waste, but the waste must be accurately described and handled in line with duty of care requirements.

Can I hire a skip for household waste?

Yes. Skips are commonly used for house clearances, renovations, garden projects and bulky household waste. Some restricted items may need separate collection.

Can I put plasterboard in a skip?

Plasterboard needs to be kept separate from general waste. Tell us if you have plasterboard before booking so we can advise on the correct disposal option.

What happens if I put restricted items in the skip?

Restricted items may result in extra charges, delayed collection or refusal of collection until they are removed. Always check before placing unusual materials in the skip.

Can I book more than one skip?

Yes. If your project creates a lot of waste, we can arrange multiple skips or exchange a full skip for an empty one.

Can I change my delivery or collection date?

Yes, subject to availability. Contact us as early as possible if your plans change.

How do I book a skip?

Complete the quote form with your postcode, waste type, skip size and preferred delivery date. A member of the RIG team will be in touch to confirm availability and price.

What information do you need for a quote?

We usually need your postcode, delivery address, waste type, estimated amount of waste, where the skip will be placed, preferred delivery date and whether the skip will be on private land or a public road.

Can you help me choose the right skip?

Yes. If you’re unsure, tell us what project you’re doing and what waste you expect to produce, and we’ll recommend the most suitable option.
